There are few other structures in Ha Noi that reflect French mark and influence over this city more than Nhà Hát Lớn Hà Nội or the Ha Noi Opera House at the mouth of Phố Tràng Tiền (formerly rue Paul Bert). Built about a decade after the beginning of the 20th century, the opera house in its neoclassical architecture and very French colonial facade has changed little over a hundred years. Except for a major painting and renovation debacle around July that the government immediately addressed.
Looking at it, you will see arched entryways, huge columns, grand roof statues, wrought iron gates, shuttered windows, august doors to outdoor balconies – all classic and romantic features of grand opera houses back in the days. Alas, I didn't get the chance to go see the inside of the majestic building, but if the photos all over the Internet are any indication, it seems to be just as classic and romantic inside.
